We started on the never ending road to mattress kingdom. What style? What type? What materials? Do we need a futon? Do we need seperate mattresses for each of us?

This is quite an open question, but to make it clearer, what kind of mattress do yo sleep on? Up until recently I swore by my 26yr old iron sprung mattress, then after many discussions (mostly one way) I caved in and decided to refresh our sleeping arrangements. Then we started on the never ending road to mattress kingdom. What style? What type? What materials? Do we need a futon? Do we need seperate mattresses for each of us? I tell you it was a bumpy ride, but finally we decided to try and find a mattress that would fit on our current bed, we have one of those with a headboard and footboard (if thats what they are called). So now that we had decided on what kind of bed/mattress we required, the journey started to find a company which cared about the environment, this would normally be quite an easy task if we was buying clothes, furniture or Web Hosting
. But we wanted a green mattress! Green packaging, green materials and green manufacturing.

After sometime we found what we felt was the best choice for us. Keetsa Eco-Friendly Cloud Mattresses this company seemed to fit the bill. Some info taken from their site:

Keetsa Green Factor
Each of our mattresses have a numeric rating called the “Keetsa Quotient™”. This is a composite score of how much each product contains a green-factor ingredient: use of recycled material or recyclable materials, use of sustainable materials such as bamboo or unbleached cotton. Some products have higher scores because we try to deliver as much of a green-factor as we can while still delivering high levels of comfort. We are constantly seeking to make products with higher and higher Keetsa Quotient scores.

- Recycled materials in Keetsa products:
Steel (coil and bed frames), Base foam layer, carton boxes.

- Recyclable materials in Keetsa products:
Foam, fiber, steel (coil and bed frames), carton boxes.
- Sustainable materials in Keetsa products:
cotton fabric, bamboo blend fabric.

Measure guidance for Keetsa Quotient™ :

(total weight of recycled and recyclable in a mattress)

—————————————— x 100

(total weight of mattress)

They have some interesting uses of tea that I had never heard of before, I quote

All-Natural Ingredient: EverGreen™, made from all-natural green tea, is embedded into the memory foam for long-lasting natural odor control.

This all seems a great ideal and direction for bed companies to be taking. After carefull studying of their website, I aslo learnt that they also have some special way of packaging their matresses, it seems not only do they use biodegradeable packaging but also they somehow compress their mattreses before packaging so they take up less space for transporting. I quote once again:

Our Packaging:

Because our mattresses are so durable and well designed, we are able to compress them in a box, which accounts for reduced shipping costs, smaller carbon footprint and no delivery trucks.

Not just any mattress can be compressed!
Keetsa uses a Patent-Pending process that allows all of our mattresses to come in a highly efficient package. We’ve tested many of the major competitive brands and they cannot stand up to this new technology. Only high quality components can be compressed and come back to their original shape. Keetsa has perfected this efficient process for all our mattresses and sleep products. Smaller packaging means a lower carbon footprint from the store to your house. All Keetsa products are packed into 100% recyclable boxes printed with water soluble ink. Also, the plastic bags used for the mattresses are bio-degradable.

Well we felt quite overwelmed to find such a company, in the bedding market. Now that we have our new mattress, I can once again sleep easily, knowing that I have done my bit to find another way of becoming greener. They are also offering Free Shipping to 48 Continental United States.

When it starts to get colder outside, here is something you can do to use up those piles of newspaper that you have laying around. There are a couple of ways to to this, the first one being a little bit more time consuming the second you need a tool for.

So the first way: You can follow this wonderful tutorial here over at ventnor permaculture you will need for this tutorial a pot preferable the diameter of the size of pots you would require. And some newspaper.

The second way is to purchase a specific tool for the job, these are readily available at most hardware stores, if found this one on Amazon.co.uk here wooden paper potter for making seedling plant pots 4cm dia x 5cm H or you can search on google here

Well I’ve finished reading this book and to be perfectly honest:

I’ve read most of the green guides out there, online and in good old paperback format, some where just rehashes of all the others some where way to hard to follow unless you had a steady income without working and time to kill. This particular book was one of the first ones that really helped to make small changes to my lifestyle that in the long run will make a much bigger difference. It offered very simple guidelines to follow through very simple solutions. For instance I will not ask for a printed receipt when I draw money out from an atm. Also it gave me some new ideas towards composting. It also helped me to stop straining myself bending over backwards to try and save the whole world in one day, by making me realize there are so many other easier ways to do my bit. I have since been buying all my friends and family cotton bags to do their grocery shopping with, these bags do not need to be boring you can make them fun and fashion conscious for the younger crowd aswell.

10 tips to help you have a Greener Bathroom

We thought that we could give you 10 tips to having a greener bathroom…

Make sure that your bathroom products packaging is bio-degradable, if its not unwrap it at the store counter and leave a strong message to the manufacturer.

Buy and use soap which is environmentally friendly such as Handmade Natural Soaps from Lush.

When cleaning your bathroom do not use heavy bleaches, there are plenty of natural cleaners available.

When washing your towels and face cloths, use washing machine liquid which is environmentally friendly.

Replace those old bulbs with nice energy efficient cfl lights, they come in all shapes and sizes now.

When your not in the bathroom turn the lights off.

Make sure that you have a toilet which has a dual flush system, if it does not place a brick in the cistern this will with an average brick save roughly 1ltr of water per flush.

When brushing your teeth, don’t leave the tap running, your wasting water.

If you do not already efficiently heat your water, find out how you can, ie new boiler or energy efficient electric shower. W strongly suggest Tankless instantaneous water heaters save money and are more energy efficient than tank type water heaters. Click here to find out more.

If you use cotton based products and toilet paper, if this is not soiled or has products that are bad for the environment it can be composted ( composting tips coming soon to this website)

Is your host green? This is a question you need to ask yourself. Recently there was a report released by the EU under the title of “Code of Conduct for Data Centres” your can read up on this if you are interested at http://ec.europa.eu/ This has fortunately started a trend amongst the UK data centers, with a lot of them jumping to promote their dedication to this report. Hopefully this will have an impact at least in the UKs IT industry.

To give you some figures the Data Centers in the UK; data centers can be classed as the large building that house servers which carry out tasks from acting as a backbone to the internet, handling banking services, emails and online gaming services, these Data centers are using roughly 3% of the UKs energy consumption, this amount is meant to grow and some say this will double by 2020

This has been quite well accepted among the ministers in the UK, with the Minster for Sustainable Development and Energy Innovation Lord Hunt commenting that he was happy for such a new code of conduct.

If we are to tackle dangerous climate change, we need to reduce emissions and the decision businesses make play a key role in meeting this challenge,”

“By signing up to this new code of conduct companies can save energy and save money too, which goes to show that what’s good for the environment is good for business.”

This makes the UK the premiere country worldwide to create legally binding targets for reducing greenhouse gasses. The really ambitious limit has been set to 80% by 2050, we will see what happens, it would be nice for this to happen.

I wonder how most data centers will follow this code, I hope we do not see them piling even more people on to the same server to cut down on electricity usage. I also hope that when they start to de-commission their old servers that they do it in a responsible manner. It would be nice to see more wind poser on top of these data centers or even solar panels, as most of these buildings that house the centers have flat roofs.

Over at Popular Mechanics they have a very interesting article Titled “Solar Thermal Power May Make Sun-Powered Grid a Reality” It seems that they will be using the Stirling Engine Tech for this. It is really about time they started to back endeavors like this. It does work!
From the article:

Planted in the New Mexico desert near Albuquerque, the six solar dish engines of the Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories look a bit like giant, highly reflective satellite dishes. Each one is a mosaic of 82 mirrors that fit together to form a 38-ft-wide parabola. The mirrors’ precise curvature focuses light onto a 7-in. area. At its most intense spot, the heat is equivalent to a blistering 13,000 suns, producing a flux 13 times greater than the space shuttle experiences during re-entry. “That’ll melt almost anything known to man,” says Sandia engineer Chuck Andraka. “It’s incredibly hot.”

The heat is used to run a Stirling engine, an elegant 192-year-old technology that creates mechanical energy from an external heat source, as opposed to the internal fuel combustion that powers most automobile engines. Hydrogen gas in a Stirling engine’s four 95 cc cylinders expands and contracts as it is heated and cooled, driving pistons to turn a small electric generator. The configuration of the dish and engine represent the fruit of more than a decade of steady improvements, developed in collaboration with Arizona-based Stirling Energy Systems.

On a crisp morning this past January, Andraka and his colleagues fired up Dish No. 3. The temperature was around freezing, and the sky was 8 percent brighter than average—the contrast between the cold air and the hot sun helps the engine run more efficiently. When power began to flow from the 25-kilowatt system, it did so with the highest conversion efficiency ever recorded in a commercial solar device: 31.25 percent of the energy shining onto the giant dish flowed into the grid.

I have noticed that the trend is finally coming around to green webhosting. I have just recently moved host to a greener datacenter, this is one of the many out there. I chose Hostgator for this task, they have recently caught onto this new trend, so I jumped on.

We have made quite a few composting pallet bins. The last one that we made at the back of our garden is designed to work in the 3 stage system, ie you have three actual bins side by side. You fist start to fill up the first one, when this is full you then turn the composting material over to the second one, this aerates the compost activating all of those wonderful micro bacteria that we need to make lovely compost. Then you start again filling up the first one again, when this one is full again, move the compost in area 2 to the third area and you compost in the first area to the second, then you guessed, it you start to fill up the first area again. When this first area is full again your third area should be full of lovely black compost/mulch full of nutrients ready to give your plants/garden a real feast.

This process is very easy to follow once you get the hang of it. A sure way to keep being greener and have a wonderful by product for your garden, which will in turn if you grow your own fruit and vegetables be good for you aswell. There are many reports that fruit and vegetable grown in natural compost has much better nutrients and vitamins for your and your family.

We found this kit below that helps you with the necessities to get started.

If you live outside the city centre it is very simple to start composting.

If you live outside the city centre it is very simple to start composting. Just get yourself a bin with a lid and a shredder. If you are also a keen gardener, your plants are out for a real treat!

Next, line your bin with some newspaper or a compostable bag. Learn a habit to put any non-animal product to this bin.

Kitchen Compost Pail
Price: $44.95
Kitchen Compost Pail
Brand: Achla

As it is important to keep the balance in your compost you also need some “dry stuff” to add to the non-animal household waste. The ratio should be around 50% household and 50% of the “dry stuff”. This is where the shredder steps in. Stop throwing away all that packaging material that you buy, cardboard, paper etc. but never any plastic. You can also profit from all the paper that comes through your letter-box. Just shred and you have plenty of the “dry stuff” to add.

Now that you have the essentials for treating you household waste you can either go and buy a compostor or build yourself one.
