Data centres asked to cut energy use

Is your host green? This is a question you need to ask yourself. Recently there was a report released by the EU under the title of “Code of Conduct for Data Centres” your can read up on this if you are interested at http://ec.europa.eu/ This has fortunately started a trend amongst the UK data centers, with a lot of them jumping to promote their dedication to this report. Hopefully this will have an impact at least in the UKs IT industry.

To give you some figures the Data Centers in the UK; data centers can be classed as the large building that house servers which carry out tasks from acting as a backbone to the internet, handling banking services, emails and online gaming services, these Data centers are using roughly 3% of the UKs energy consumption, this amount is meant to grow and some say this will double by 2020

This has been quite well accepted among the ministers in the UK, with the Minster for Sustainable Development and Energy Innovation Lord Hunt commenting that he was happy for such a new code of conduct.

If we are to tackle dangerous climate change, we need to reduce emissions and the decision businesses make play a key role in meeting this challenge,”

“By signing up to this new code of conduct companies can save energy and save money too, which goes to show that what’s good for the environment is good for business.”

This makes the UK the premiere country worldwide to create legally binding targets for reducing greenhouse gasses. The really ambitious limit has been set to 80% by 2050, we will see what happens, it would be nice for this to happen.

I wonder how most data centers will follow this code, I hope we do not see them piling even more people on to the same server to cut down on electricity usage. I also hope that when they start to de-commission their old servers that they do it in a responsible manner. It would be nice to see more wind poser on top of these data centers or even solar panels, as most of these buildings that house the centers have flat roofs.
